Olecranon Bursitis

Olecranon bursitis is a relatively common condition characterized by painful swelling near the elbow joint, precisely in the olecranon bursa, which serves as a cushion to protect the elbow. Bursae are found around all main joints and act as shock absorbers between muscles, bones, tendons, and skin. Bursitis develops when a bursa gets inflamed due to overuse, injury, or infection, leading to pain that may appear suddenly or gradually.

Symptoms

  • Swelling: The earliest sign is usually swelling, which may not be immediately visible because of the loose skin on the elbow back.
  • Pain: As the swelling increases, the bursa stretches, leading to discomfort. Pain is often exacerbated by direct pressure on the elbow or during bending. In severe cases, the swelling can restrict elbow movement.
  • Redness and warmth: An infection of the bursa causes the skin to appear red and feel warm when touched. Without timely treatment, it could extend to other areas of the arm or even reach the bloodstream, potentially leading to serious complications. Occasionally, an infected bursa may rupture, releasing pus.

Causes and Risk Factors

Olecranon bursitis can develop due to various factors:

  • A direct impact or hard blow to the elbow.
  • Frequent leaning on the elbow.
  • Infection caused by insect bites or puncture wounds
  • Underlying conditions like gout or rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Jobs that involve frequent crawling with the elbows, including plumbing or air conditioning work.

Diagnosis

Doctors at The Joint Pain Clinic often diagnose olecranon bursitis based on clinical evaluation. Our primary goal is to identify any underlying condition that may have contributed to the problem. In some cases, imaging tests such as X-rays, ultrasounds, or MRI scans may be used to rule out other potential causes. However, in most instances, no specific underlying cause is identified.

Treatment Options

If infection is the reason for olecranon bursitis, the doctor may drain the fluid from the bursa using a needle and recommend antibiotics. For olecranon bursitis unrelated to infection, our clinic can suggest these treatment options:

  • Using a protective pad to cushion the elbow.
  • Refraining from activities that exert direct pressure on the inflamed elbows.
  • Using anti-inflammatory drugs to help ease swelling.
  • Injecting corticosteroids directly into the bursa to alleviate pain and inflammation.

If recurrent olecranon bursitis does not respond to conservative treatments, surgical removal of the bursa, known as an olecranon bursectomy, may be necessary.

Prevention

To reduce the risk of bursitis, protect your elbow from too much friction and pressure. Wearing elbow pads while leaning on hard surfaces can help prevent irritation and inflammation.
