High Volume Injection (HVI)
The Joint Pain Clinic provides high-volume injections (HVI), which is an effective treatment for stiff and sore joints. We often use this treatment to address conditions like frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis).
During the procedure, an ultrasound scanner is used to guide an injection involving a combination of steroid, local anesthetic, and sterile saline into the joint gap. The goal is to stretch the tight tissues from the inside out. This injection usually provides faster pain relief.
Role of Medicines in HVI
- Steroids: These act as anti-inflammatory agents that mimic the natural steroids produced by the body. They help ease pain and inflammation in the joint.
- Local anesthetic: This medication numbs the area to lessen discomfort during the injection while also contributing some volume to the solution.
- Sterile saline: This inert liquid makes up the majority of the injection and provides the necessary volume required to stretch out stiff and tight tissues, especially the joint capsule.
Possible Side Effects
- Post injection flare
- Infection
- Skin depigmentation due to steroid
- Blood sugar fluctuations caused by steroid
- Facial flashing
