Caudal Epidural Injection

Caudal Epidural Injection

A caudal epidural injection is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive method we use at The Joint Pain Clinic for pain relief. During the procedure, a corticosteroid drug is administered into the epidural gap at the spinal base via the sacral canal. It is usually delivered directly, targeting inflamed nerves to reduce pain and inflammation in the legs and the lower back. We often carry out this treatment under local anesthesia and with the help of an ultrasound in order to ensure precise delivery.

Conditions We Treat with Caudal Epidural Injection

  • Lumbar radiculopathy: Pain stretching along the nerve passage in the lower back that is caused by spinal stenosis or herniated discs.
  • Sciatica: Pain that spreads from the lower back area and moves down the leg, usually due to nerve compression.
  • Herniated discs: A condition in which displaced spinal discs press on surrounding nerves.
  • Degenerative disc disease: This occurs when the spinal discs' cushioning function is lost, resulting in pain and discomfort.
  • Post-surgical pain: Pain that persists after spinal surgery that may sometimes be treated with targeted medicine delivered into the affected area.

Benefits of Caudal Epidural Injection

  • Pain relief: Pain and inflammation can be specifically relieved by administering medicine directly to the damaged nerve roots.
  • Decreased reliance on oral drugs: As a result of managing the source of discomfort, people may need fewer oral painkillers that could have adverse side effects.
  • Minimally invasive procedure: Compared to surgical procedures, the caudal epidural injection is a less invasive method that enables a speedier recovery, and little discomfort.
  • Short recovery period: After the injection, most people are able to return to their regular activities.
  • Possibility of long-lasting effects: When paired with exercise and lifestyle modifications, some people experience relief from pain for a long period.
  • Increased mobility: Most individuals report having a better range of motion and reduced pain after injection.

Possible Side Effects

  • Short-term soreness at the injection site
  • Headache or minor dizziness
  • Rare severe complications — consult your doctor to discuss any potential risks
